Toyota's newest headache arrived at the El Cajon dealership on the back of a tow truck. and its owner came too.. to talk about his close call on a San Diego freeway.
James Sikes called 911 from his 2008 Prius on Monday, as the car sped past 90 miles an hour. an officer pulled alongside and instructed him to apply both the brake pedal and the emergency brake. When the car finally slowed down, Sikes cut the engine and coasted to a stop.
Toyota says a technician will investigate..but the driver has had trouble getting any personal attention from the company. The dealership gave him an 800 number.
Sikes says he received a recall notice for floor mat problems and took his Prius in about 2 weeks ago. He says the dealership insisted his car wan't part of the recall, and he didn't question it. Now.. He says he'll never drive a Prius again. And california police say there's no doubt..there was fear in his voice when he called 911.
While Toyota looks for answers, the US government is also on the way. The Transportation Department sent investigators from Washington to see what happened.
